How We Make Our Handmade Brushtail Possum Nest Boxes

Every Potting Mad Brushtail Possum Nest Box is individually handmade in Queensland using reclaimed timber, giving existing timber a second life while creating a practical shelter option for Australian wildlife.

Brushtail possums are much larger than the birds that use many of our other nest boxes, so their box requires a completely different set of dimensions, entrance size and internal features.

Rather than using one generic nest box for every animal, we build this design specifically with Brushtail Possums in mind.

๐Ÿฆ Why a Dedicated Brushtail Possum Box?

Brushtail Possums naturally use tree hollows for daytime shelter and nesting. Where suitable hollows are limited, a purpose-built nest box can provide an additional sheltered space.

The larger body, generous entrance and climbing-friendly front panel distinguish this design from our bird nest boxes.

๐Ÿชต Starting with Reclaimed Timber

Our possum boxes are handmade using reclaimed timber rather than mass-produced sheet material.

The reference design shown below was originally prepared around 15mm material. Because we work with reclaimed timber, individual board thicknesses and finished external measurements may vary slightly while we retain the important proportions and species-specific features of the design.

Natural grain, knots, old nail marks, colour variation and weathering are all part of the character of the finished box.

๐Ÿง— Climbing Features

Brushtail Possums are capable climbers, and the front of this design incorporates a textured climbing area beneath the entrance.

When we adapt the design to reclaimed timber, we make sure the animal has a practical surface around the entrance rather than an unnecessarily smooth panel.

๐ŸŒฟ A Large, Sheltered Interior

The deeper internal chamber provides substantially more room than our Rosella and Lorikeet boxes.

This extra space reflects the much larger body size of the intended occupant while still providing an enclosed and protected environment.

๐Ÿงน Removable Floor for Maintenance

Our nest boxes include a removable floor panel so the interior can be accessed for cleaning, inspection or maintenance if required.

The box should never be opened or cleaned while it is occupied. Any maintenance should only be carried out once you are confident the animal has left.

๐Ÿ”จ Handmade One at a Time

Each box is individually cut, assembled and checked by hand.

Working with reclaimed timber means we often make small adjustments during construction because no two boards are exactly alike.

This gives each finished box its own appearance while retaining the core dimensions and features appropriate for the species.

๐ŸŒณ Ready for Installation

Once completed, the structure, roof, entrance, removable base and mounting points are checked before the box is ready for collection.

Choose a secure tree or other appropriate structure and position the box in a quiet location with some protection from harsh weather.
