How We Make Our Handmade Rosella & Lorikeet Nest Boxes
Scott MartensShare
Every Potting Mad Rosella and Lorikeet Nest Box is individually handmade in Queensland using reclaimed timber.
This taller bird-box design provides a deep nesting chamber with an entrance sized to suit the particular bird species selected when ordering.
Rather than treating all hollow-nesting birds as the same, we adjust important features such as the entrance opening to make the box more appropriate for its intended occupant.
๐ฆ Why Rosellas and Lorikeets Need the Right Box
Rosellas and lorikeets naturally use tree hollows, but different species vary in size.
The entrance therefore matters just as much as the overall box. A thoughtfully sized entrance provides access for the intended bird without unnecessarily making the opening larger than required.
๐ชต Handmade from Reclaimed Timber
We make our boxes from reclaimed timber, giving usable material another purpose while creating a rustic finish that looks at home in an Australian backyard.
The reference plan shown below was prepared around 15mm material. Our reclaimed boards naturally vary in thickness, so individual finished boxes may vary slightly while retaining the important proportions and internal space of the design.
๐ณ๏ธ Species-Specific Entrance Size
One of the most important parts of this design is the entrance opening.
We do not simply cut the same hole into every bird box. The intended species is considered when the box is made so the entrance can be appropriately sized.
This is particularly useful when building boxes for different Rosellas and Lorikeets, which may use similar styles of hollow while differing in body size.
๐ช Helping Young Birds Reach the Entrance
The reference design includes climbing grooves beneath the entrance on both sides of the front panel.
Our bird boxes provide an internal climbing surface beneath the opening to help young birds reach the exit when they are ready to leave the nest.
๐ฆ Why We Usually Don't Add an External Perch
Our bird boxes are generally supplied without an external perch unless one is specifically requested or appropriate for the selected species.
Native hollow-nesting birds do not generally need a projecting perch to enter the box, and avoiding unnecessary external perches also removes an easy waiting point immediately beside the entrance for unwanted birds.
๐งน Removable Floor
Each box includes a removable floor panel so the interior can be accessed for maintenance or cleaning when required.
A nest box should never be opened or cleaned while it is occupied. Wait until you are certain nesting activity has finished before carrying out maintenance.
๐จ Built One Box at a Time
Each Rosella and Lorikeet box is measured, cut, assembled and finished individually.
Because reclaimed timber varies naturally, grain, colour, knots, weathering and other markings will differ from one box to another.
That individuality is part of the character of a genuinely handmade product.
โค๏ธ Made for Backyard Wildlife
Our aim is to create practical nest boxes that suit Australian wildlife while making thoughtful use of reclaimed materials.
Each completed box combines a species-conscious design with the rustic character of timber that has already had a previous life.
